Is a NIF essential for living in Portugal?

Absolutely yes.

The NIF tax identification number is indispensable for various activities such as opening a bank account, securing employment with a company or by yourself, locating a place to live, obtaining a SIM card, and much more. Therefore, if you're considering a move to Portugal, having a NIF is non-negotiable.

What's the time frame for receiving my NIF?

Upon receipt of all required documents and information from your end, the process to get your NIF usually spans between 1 to 7 working days. Please note, the duration depends on the internal procedures of the Portuguese tax authorities, which are beyond our control. Therefore, there might be slight variations in the timeline.

Will my NIF be permanent?

Indeed, the NIF you receive is not a "temporary" one.

The NIF tax identification number assigned to you will be permanent and remain unchanged in perpetuity.

Can I submit an application for those under 18?

Yes, it's possible to apply for a NIF for those under 18. However, a parent (either mother or father) will need to act as a representative and there will be an additional document to sign. Rest assured, it's nothing complicated.

Is it possible to modify a fiscal representative, address, or other data within my NIF?

Yes, you can amend details related to your fiscal representative, address, and other data linked to your NIF. Upon obtaining residency in Portugal, it becomes possible for you to refresh the address listed in your NIF, thereby removing the requirement for a fiscal representative. This process can be carried out by visiting the official Portal das Finanças website or by making a personal visit to the local tax office. Furthermore, you're offered the opportunity to set up an online communication channel by providing your Portuguese phone number and email address. Using this channel, you can interact with the tax office and request the termination of your fiscal representative.

Yes: a free 6-month tax representation period is included in the service, whether or not you are an EU national. You can opt out as soon as you become resident in Portugal by notifying us. If you do not inform us, tax representation is then automatically renewed every 12 months at a cost of €149.

Is the process entirely online?

Indeed, our service is completely online-based. There's no need for you to travel anywhere—well, except to Portugal, of course, once you have your NIF :)

IS it possible to get the password and login details for “portal das financas”?

Yes, it is possible to request your login details for the tax office website (Finanças). In this case it will be sent to us and we will forward it to you by email.

Is it possible to visit your office in person?
